What's inside a frog?

Middle and upper school dissected frogs last week and gave the Bears class an opportunity to check out their surgical handiwork. Most of the students were very curious and jumped at the chance to see the inner workings of the frogs!

Zoo Adventure!

Our Oregon Zoo trip last Friday was a magical adventure! It was a beautiful day and all of the animals were out to greet us and say hello, especially the sea lion! It was a wonderful day of learning and exploring and we can't wait until next year's trip!

Summer Reading Program

We have started a summer reading program!!!

**This means that everyday we take 30 minutes at the end of the day to read. On some days we read to them and on other days we have paired up with upper school to read.

Welcome to the Bear Cub Class Everyone !

Portfolio Day came and went, the Spring Performance was awesome, and Graduation Day was a blast which means summer is here and you are all Bear Cubs now!!

We have a great summer planned. A little bit of review here, a little bit of new curriculum there, and a whole ton of fun in between.

First and foremost however, meet your teachers - Mr. Loehr, Ms. Loehr, and Ms. Armbruster. If you haven't found us running around the school yet, definitely try to. We work very well through email too; ournames@classacademy.com (i.e - mrloehr@classacademy.com)

Now to the nitty gritty:
Q: "what should we be working on at home?" A: INDEPENDENCE
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and then...practice some more

It is absolutely amazing what our children can accomplish when we SHOW them how to succeed, SUPPLY them with the materials/information they need to succeed, AND allow them to practice. Our goal this summer is to make our students completely independent!

Practice at home: (1) putting materials into backpacks on their own (lunch boxes, sweaters, jackets), (2) carrying their own backpacks on their backs (not dragging them), (3) washing their own hands WITH soap, and (4) anything else you think your child could use more practice being independent with; eating, brushing teeth, dressing for school, dressing for bed, changing, etc.

That is your homework for the summer! So, if you are wondering if there is anything to you can be doing at home - keep practicing!

As far as curriculum goes, we will mostly be reviewing - rhyming, letter recognition, letter sounds, blends, short vowel reading, numeral recognition, numeral writing, one-to-one correspondance, number-to-numeral relationships, coloring, cutting, and cross lateral thinking.

Strange oceanic visitors!

We had some strange visitors in science today, thanks to some very generous and thoughtful bearcubs-a puffer fish and a leopard shark! Yikes! We all had a great time and learned a lot (like not to eat a puffer fish!)

End Of The Year

It is the end of the year Bear parents!! What a great year it has been! Our students have grown leaps and bounds further than could have ever been imagined. They should be very proud of themselves for the progress this year.

Portfolio Day: Portfolio day will be next Wednesday May 25th. It will be held between 1:00pm and 2:00pm. We have assigned 15 minute time slots for each student to present their portfolios to their parents. Look for an email from Ms. Hintz with the time you have been assigned. If the time provided you is not possible please email Ms. Hintz requesting a different time. HOWEVER, we may not be able to switch times. Please try to plan accordingly for next week. :)

Sleeping Beauty: Our field trip to go see the performance of Sleeping Beauty is next week May 26th.

Spring Performance: Our Spring performance will be held June 1st! And they students will be shifting to their new classes June 2nd!

Insects invade our science class!

Our science unit on bugs is crawling with excitement! We got to look at 12 ladybugs, a shield bug and a bark beetle! And there will be more insect exploration to come! We can't wait!

We just finished up the unit on nocturnal animals. We learned about raccoons, bats, bush babies and owls. It was a hoot! Our next science unit will be all about our aviary pals, birds!

My how our Bear Cubs have grown! So far, this year has been full of exciting accomplishments and surpassed goals. All of the Bears are reading, writing, calculating, and even ice skating at amazing speeds and at top-notch potential! Ice skating season was a huge success and it was extremely enjoyable to watch each and EVERY student participate and develop their ice skating skills. Now we have swimming to look forward to in May (keep practicing how to put that bathing suit on)!
A few reminders to keep our Bear Cubs strong through out the year include getting to bed early and eating healthy meals and snacks! These two elements help to ensure that each student is ready to succeed every day they show up for school! Also, keep reading as often as you can (before bed, on the way to school, while waiting for meals to be prepared, on long trips), counting real money, and practicing parts of speech (verbs, adjective, prepositions, nouns, proper nouns).
Let's keep up our strong partnership and help our Bears to succeed even more!

Welcome back Bear Cubs and Bear Cub parents! We hope everyone had a wonderful and safe holiday break. We are looking forward to the second half of this year being just as great, if not better than the first half!

During this second half of the year, Mr. Loehr will take over the math curriculum and Ms. Loehr will adopt the reading and phonics curriculum. Homework for each of these subjects as well as homework for fine motor skills will again be sent home weekly (on Friday). In addition to weekly homework, the Grizzly and Panda Bears will be bringing home nightly reading homework to help prepare for the following day's classroom activities. These books must come back to class every day.

Ice skating is beginning next Thursday, January 13th!! Please write your child's shoe size on their hand the day of skating (this and every Thursday in January). This is a wonderful experience for your child and we ask that if you would like to enjoy it as well, please watch your student from the 2nd floor.

Lastly, our January maintainence day is on Saturday, January 15th. This is a wonderful opportunity to fulfill volunteer hours as well as keep our school looking fabulous! Thanks for all your help and again, welcome back!

Harvest Fun

We had a wonderful time making butter this week; what a delicious treat! Check out all the great pitcures! We've also been enjoyiong learning about the Pilgrims and Native Americans and what their first Thanksgiving might have been like (ask your students what facts they can tell you about Pilgrims).

As next week, the week of November 22nd, is a shortened week, we ask that all homework folders be returned on Wednesday November 24th rather than Thursday, since we will not be at school. Homework will NOT be reissued until the following Thursday, December 2nd.

Holiday Fun

As it is November, we have a few holidays to celebrate and wanted to give you a heads up of what to expect the major themes to be about this month. Diwali, the festival of lights, will be celebrated in school this Friday, Nevember 5. We have various parent helpers coming into school to teach our class about this holiday as well as share some special food, clothing, and activities.

Though out the month we will be talking about explorers and settlers in America to better understand the meaning and purpose of Thanksgiving and the colonization of America. We will be making butter, learning about feasts, and discovering the way life used to be when America was colonized.

Veteran's Day falls on Thursday, November 11 and will be acknowledged by a day off from school.

We hope you join us in learning new information about these holidays and encourage your students to be excited and ask many questions!

The bear cub teachers would like to thank all the parents for attending back to school night. Your participation, questions and feedback were all greatly appreciated. As parents, you are a crucial part of our team to educate your child, as education doesn't stop once a student leaves the class. Now that you know what specifically goes on in the classroom, many of these activities can be practiced at home, further enhancing your child's education.

New Beginnings

Well through our third week of school, the Bears have developed many new skills already and are on their way to a fantastic year of learning!!

Build a Community
Aside from academics, the Bears have learned new strategies to solve problems, stand up for themselves and their friends, and begin to understand the importance of being a good citizen. We hope you all received the letter that was sent home in regards to the school wide bullying policy. Again, we just want to remind parents to practice at home with your student. Most importantly, empower your student to talk to a teacher immediately if something happens at school as well as model appropriate words to say to a friend who may be hurting them. Thanks again for your help in making our school a safer place!

Homework
One last reminder, homework is provided at the end of each week to provide the appropriate time needed to complete each part. Please follow the given directions and only complete the homework that is designated for each night of the week. If you ever need extra copies of homework, they will be copied and placed, loose-leaf, in the homework bins by the front office doors.

Lastly, thank you all very much for making classroom projects a success by providing special supplies from your home!

End of Summer

What a wonderful Summer the Bear Cubs had: venturing to the Zoo, learning about space and farm animals, exploring our knowledge of time, estimation, and calendar concepts, as well as getting a great jump start into our reading program. We are looking forward to an exciting new school year looking like a brand new Bear Cub class! The learning is endless with these Bear Cubs!

Keep reading, keep exploring, and keep challenging your children to be INDEPENDENT. We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable vacation and we can't wait to see you all walk back through the CLASS Academy doors ready for an excellent year.

The New Bears!

Welcome New Bears!!!

Ms. Loehr, Ms. Armbruster, and Mr. Loehr would like to welcome all of the new bear cubs to their new environment. There will be three (3) bear classes this year Grizzly Bears, Panda Bears, and Polar Bears. Ms. Armbruster will be the Polar Bears base teacher, Ms. Loehr will be the Panda Bears base teacher, and Mr. Loehr will be the Grizzly Bear base teacher.

Though we will see our base class for a few more periods than the other two classes, we will be rotating the classes between the three teachers. Ms. Armbruster will be teaching Science and Music, Ms. Loehr will teach Math and Fine Motor, and Mr. Loehr will teach Reading and Phonics.

Please come and explore your child's new learning environment when you have the chance. Brag boards, Student of the Day boards, and Birthday boards have all been posted to show your students how special the are!

Also be sure to check out our Media Board at the entrance to Ms Loehr's room (adjacent to the art room) for a copy of your child's schedule and other important information.
